•Hydrolysis-induced incorporation of carboxyl groups on PAN membrane surface.•Initial water flux for HPAN membrane was twice than that of NF-3.•HPAN performance and fouling behavior was explored against two different DOM sources.•H2O2/O3-HPAN substantially reduced both THMs and HAAs formation potential.•HPAN membrane removes upto 50% of the DBPs in TAP water.
