•Defense responses were induced by NO to apple aganinst black spot disease.•NO treatment reduced the accumulation of Alternaria toxins in apples.•Defense-related substances, enzyme activity and gene expression were analyzed.•Phenolpropane metabolism may be closely related to apple fruit disease resistance.
