•Hydroponic cultivation with bioinoculants may increase saffron profitability.•Plant growth promoting bacteria and an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus were tested.•Bioinoculants improved the spice's safranal concentration.•Mixed formulation increased saffron total phenolic content.•The corm yield resulted enhanced for inoculated plants.
