Human platelets release amyloid peptides β1-40 and β1-42 in response to hemostatic, immune, and hypoxic stimuli

•Platelets release amyloid β (Aβ) peptides, the main components of brain plaques in patients with dementia.•Release of Aβ peptides is triggered by platelet activation using different stimuli.•Availability of oxygen further regulates the release of Aβ peptides by platelets.•Amyloid β peptides appear to be stored and released by platelet structures called α granules.
