Factors associated with classroom participation in preschool through third grade learners on the autism spectrum

•Teachers most often presented mathematics learning opportunities that required low-cognitive demand.•Teachers’ language varied across mathematical tasks and was associated with student participation.•Math-related talk and Responsive language appeared to be two important features of talk.•Interdisciplinary work is needed to support access to higher-level mathematics opportunities for autistic learners.
