Station-keeping strategy for tethered drag sail-based transverse formation

•The drag sail can move with the chief satellite with the fixed relative position owing to the continuously atmospheric force.•The feasible formation configurations are investigated from the perspective of control force direction.•The proposed maintenance strategy is successful realized under the smooth rotation of the drag sail.
