Increasing worker motivation using a reward scheme with probabilistic elements

•We investigated whether probabilistic reward schemes can increase worker motivation.•The “single lottery” (SL) probabilistic scheme was the most motivating.•Under the SL scheme, workers accumulate tickets in their own personal lottery.•Mechanisms: Over-optimism, goal gradient effect, and uncertainty elimination.•Lower ability workers tended to be most motivated by the SL scheme.
