Abstract
•Eutectic interaction of B4C with steel blade and ZIRLO channel box at T > 1500 K.•Fast temperature escalation from 2000 to 2300 K after the reflood onset.•30% hydrogen released during the reflood was realized due to the oxidation of B4C.•Crucible effect of the outer oxide layer on retention of the cladding metal melt.•Model predicted the clad behavior well and underestimated the absorber influence.
