Experimental study on fuel depressurization and its effect on dispersion

•An experimental study is presented on transition response of surrogate fuel dispersion under simulated fuel failure.•The study provides first of a kind empirical observation on the scatter and displacement of fuel particles during fuel failure.•The outcome of this work provides a comparison against parison of previous limited data and the well characterized relocation of fuel particles post fuel failure.
