•Superiority of Oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) versus extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF) was not demonstrated in the treatment of single-level lumbar pathology from L1 to L5.•XLIF demonstrated significantly higher rates of postoperative neuropraxia as compared to OLIF.•OLIF was found to have significantly greater rates of vascular injury as compared to XLIF.
