•In doped Sn3O4 photocatalyst was synthesized.•In doping increases the concentration of oxygen vacancy and provides more active sites.•In-Sn3O4 exhibits larger specific surface area and excels in light absorption and electron-hole pairs separation.•In-Sn3O4 exhibits enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and good stability.
