•The Tröger base analogue coordinated with potassium iodide and containing crown ether CATB-KI was fabricated.•The acidified CATB-KIs shown high catalytic efficiency to cyclic carbonates.•The synergistic mechanism has been proved in terms of experimental results and calculation of dynamics.
