Properties and potential application of ozone-oxidized starch for enhanced reverse flotation of fine hematite

•The effect of eco-friendly ozone oxidation on the properties and depressive performance of starch was studied.•Ozone-oxidized starch rendered the hematite surface more hydrophilic than native starch.•Ozone treatment triggered starch depolymerization along with a desirable increase in starch solubility and acidity.•An enhanced affinity of starch for hematite was observed after ozone treatment.
