•Smooth PLA stents were fabricated by a four-axis printing system.•Isothermal heat treatment increases crystallinity by 212%.•Heat-treated stent has 11% higher radial stiffness and 33% higher load capacity.•Heat treatment eliminates residual strain, enhancing bending safety.
