•The optical contrast of AGSST is large enough for integrated photonics applications.•The Ag-doping GSST enhancement mechanism has been revealed.•The extinction coefficient of CR AGSST has been half lowered at 1550 nm.•Thermal stability is also improved by Ag doping.
