•High density dislocation induced high strength of as-selective laser melted CoCrNi alloy.•Low-angle grain boundaries improved the strength of the alloy annealed at 800 °C for 1 h.•Dislocation and phase transformation enhanced strength and plasticity of the alloy annealed at 800 °C for 4 h.
