•Linear velocity distribution of detonation production applies to hollow charges.•2 times aspect ratio of either solid or hollow charge is not enough for theoretical study.•New maximum fragment velocity formula for hollow charges is deduced.•New velocity distribution formulae are built based on results of broad aspect ratios.
