Abstract
Dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpenoids are a group of highly oxygenated and structurally diverse plant-derived compounds based on tricyclic 5,11-epoxy-5β,10α-eudesman-4(14)-ene framework. The tricyclic C15 skeleton can be hydroxylated on almost any carbon atom, leading to stereochemical complexity and a large structural variety among the sesquiterpenoids. The most recent review on the chemistry and biological activity of the sesquiterpenoids was published in 2007. In that review, 462 new dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpenoids were reported from the Celastraceae, Hippocrateaceae, and Lamiaceae families, with interesting biological activities like immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antitumor, anti-HIV, multi-drug resistance reversal, antifeedant and insecticidal activities. Since then, ca. 400 novel sesquiterpenoids of this class have been reported with unprecedented biological activities such as antiprotozoal, neuroprotective, and antidiabetic activities, and some of the compounds were found in three plant families, viz., Pinaceae, Santalaceae, and Saxifragaceae, from which dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpenoids have not been previously reported. This article reviews the recent developments on the chemical and biological activity studies of dihydro-β-agarofuran sesquiterpenoids from 2007 to 2021.
