Individual and environmental bicycling determinants during a pandemic

•Individual and environmental factors have a role in explaining the shift towards bicycling during the COVID-19 pandemic.•Policy changes and changes in perceived safety were important determinants of increased cycling during the pandemic.•Increasing the accessibility of e-bikes could sustain and further the recent shift towards bicycling.•Limiting certain streets to local traffic was the only policy identified as a significant predictor for bicycle commuting.
