Effect of car use on social frailty among community-dwelling older adults in rural areas

•In rural areas, older adults usually drive a car for transportation.•Older adults who drive a car had a lower risk of the onset of social frailty.•A system and policy to support older drivers are needed to prevent social frailty.•Assistance with mobility is also needed for those without a driver's license.
