•Daily changes in self-esteem are closely connected to people’s relationship satisfaction.•People have higher self-esteem on days when they are happier with their relationship.•Daily self-esteem-relationship effects are robust across time.•The effects generalize across age and gender.•The effects are independent of people’s dispositional self-esteem.
