Abstract

•An OFF-ON-OFF fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cu2+ ions has been developed.•The binding interaction between R and Cu2+ ions is 2:1 by Jobs plot, Mass spectra and DFT.•The receptor was effectively applied to logic gates, and molecular keypad lock.•The R was utilized to measure the trace amounts of Cu2+ ions in water samples.
