•Development of BiVO4@TiO2 NRs Type-II heterojunction.•Optimization of 1D Core-Shell TiO2-BiVO4 NRs.•TiO2 NRs acts as a poor electron transport medium.•0.2% Fe-TiO2 NRs acts as efficient electron collector as well as a photocatalyst.•BiVO4@0.2 %Fe-TiO2 shows excellent charge separation with Jp of 1.52 mA/cm2.
