•94.2% met diagnostic criteria for symptoms of PTSD and•98.4% met diagnostic criteria for symptomatic depression.•Some factors that predispose to these mental disorders (depression and PTSD) were female gender and having symptoms of depression while having accommodation not overcrowded has a protective effect. However only having symptoms of depression remained statistically significant.•No research was published since the beginning of Boko Haram crises
