•The Hybrid III dummy head and neck was introduced to evaluate the performance of the combat helmet.•The influence of the foam thickness was critical to mitigate brain.•The shot location presenting the most significant brain injury risk is the rear.•Increasing the height of the helmet position has involved lower accelerations.
