Mechanical responses and fracturing behavior of jointed rock masses with a cavity under different dynamic loads

•The mechanical and fracturing behaviors exhibited significant joint structure effect and strain rate effect.•The crack coalescence patterns between the two joints and the cavity were identified and the failure mechanism was revealed.•The ultimate failure of the parallel-jointed samples with a cavity was mainly a tensile failure, accompanied by local shear failure.
