•Effects of film cooling hole placement location for three different dusting film cooling configurations along the surface of the squealer recess region of a transonic turbine blade tip are considered.•Heat transfer coefficient and adiabatic film cooling effectiveness distributions vary significantly as dusting hole placement and configuration are altered.•Local adiabatic film cooling effectiveness indicate that all three dusting hole configurations provide good film coverage within portions of squealer recess regions.•Two configurations provide good surface protection for downstream portions of the blades as indicated by locally higher film cooling effectiveness values.
