A new method to identify non-steady thermal load based on element differential method

•Element differential method combined with modified levenberg-marquardt algorithm is proposed for identify non-steady thermal load.•Sensitivity coefficients are accurately solved using complex variable derivative method in iteration process.•The proposed method shows good robustness under different initial guess heat fluxes and random errors.
