•Cyclic R-curves are obtained after heat treatments at 265 and 300 °C.•The heat treatments enhance the fatigue crack propagation threshold.•Crack closure is the underlying mechanism for the improved crack growth resistance.•Residual stress is not deemed a determining factor.
