•TGF-β promotes the polarization of astrocytes toward the A2 phenotype.•M2 macrophages and their conditioned media enhance the anti-inflammatory effect by promoting the polarization of A2 astrocytes.•TGF-β secreted by M2 macrophages facilitates the polarization of astrocytes to A2 phenotype through PI3K/Akt pathway.
