Systematic review and meta-analysis: Comparing hepatocellular and cholestatic patterns of drug-induced liver injury

•Cholestatic and hepatocellular DILI are associated with similar rates of ALF and liver-related death.•Compared to hepatocellular injury, mixed pattern of DILI is associated with more benign outcomes.•Compared to hepatocellular injury, cholestatic DILI is more likely to result in chronicity of insult.•Other demographic and biochemical parameters should be further investigated to conceive a risk model in evaluating DILI.
