Does stakeholder participation improve environmental governance? Evidence from a meta-analysis of 305 case studies

•We examine how key design features of participation affect environmental outcomes.•In general, participation has a positive impact on environmental governance outcomes.•Power delegation to participants is the most reliable predictor of outcomes.•Communication intensity and participants’ environmental stance are also influential.•Effects vary depending on the context and government agencies’ environmental goals.
