NaHCO3 treatment potentiates the nutritional qualities and androgenic capabilities of bambara (Vigna subterranean L. Verdc) groundnut seeds

•Bambara (Vigna subterranean L. Verdc) is an underutilized legume cultivated by few indigenous subsistence farmers in sub-Sahara Africa.•This study established the nutritional functionality of NaHCO3 treated Bambara seeds; as treatment enhances essential phytonutrients, improves haematological profiles and boost androgenic capabilities.•Consequently, study revealed inherent potentials of NaHCO3 treated Bambara seeds towards improving vitality/virility, thus their consumption should be encouraged.•Incorporation of these alkaline treated Bambara seeds into edible products/formulations will be highly beneficial as it may serve as functional food in management of ailments.
