•Investigation the ignition temperatures of ethane-air mixture at elevated pressures.•Ignition temperature of ethane decreases with increasing initial pressure and ethane concentration.•Pressure-sensitive period for ignition temperature of ethane lies within 0.3–0.4 MPa.•Reaction of C2H5 with oxygen is an important reaction pathway for the slow oxidation of ethane.•Study provides valuable insights into autoignition behavior for safety protocols and combustible gas system design.
