Abstract
•Pyrolysis properties of tar-rich coal and macerals were analyzed by TG and in situ FTIR.•Vitrinite had higher hydrocarbon potential due to aliphatic chains from in suit FTIR.•Inertinite had poor reaction performance and stronger stability due to more aromatic CH.•Volatile yield depended on hydrogen-rich structures such as aliphatic –CH-, –CH2-.•Structural parameters varied with the distribution of functional groups.
