•Rectangular and cylindrical kilns were designed using fluent analysis.•Cylindrical kiln has greater suitability for the pyrolysis process.•ANN model was used to predict the optimum parameters of the pyrolysis process.•The results revealed that the developed ANN model is well-suited.
