•H2 purity was maximum at 873 K, S/C ratio of 5 and a process pressure of 1 atm.•Autothermal reforming needed higher temperatures but gave good H2 purity.•NiO and CaO based oxygen carriers/sorbents were used due to economic reasons.•Techno-economic analysis revealed autothermal reforming with CC as best option.•Fluidized bed reactors were the most preferred contactors for CLR process.
