An evaluation and shortening of the Cooking and Food Provisioning Action Scale (CAFPAS) using item response theory

•The measurement properties Cooking and Food Provisioning Action Scale (CAFPAS) are assessed using Rasch analysis.•The CAFPAS performs adequately according to Rasch analysis, but there may be room for improvement.•A Swedish translation of the CAFPAS is tested and validated.•A short (11-item) version of the CAFPAS is suggested and evaluated using exploratory factor analysis and Rasch analysis.•The short CAFPAS may be a good option in studies where the CAFPAS is a component of a battery of surveys to reduce overall survey length.
