Nitrogen availability determines the vertical patterns of accumulation, partitioning, and reallocation of dry matter and nitrogen in maize

•Grain nitrogen (N) relies on reallocation more than grain dry matter (DM).•Grain N increasingly depend on the reallocation as decreasing N availability.•The middle-canopy leaves reallocated more N to the grains.•The greatest-contribution leaf ranks were shifting with N availability.
