•A transparent impeller with double rings is designed reaching the speed of 3500 rpm.•The strong relation between flow pattern transition and head degradation is revealed.•Effects of flow rate and rotational speed on flow pattern transition are studied.•A new correlation is proposed for predicting bubble size on high rotational speeds.
