•MWA showed similar cumulative RFS rates to RFA in potentially transplantable patients.•Neither RFS rates nor OS rates were significantly different between the two groups.•MWA and RFA were not the risk factors of recurrence beyond Milan criteria.•The MWA group showed more frequent major complications and longer hospital stays.
