Implementation Of A Preoperative Fasting Abbreviation Protocol: A Pilot Study In A Southern Brazil Hospital

Rationale: The preoperative fasting is a common practice in surgical centers to prevent vomiting and aspiration. However, prolonged fasting aggravates the metabolic response of patients, what impacts on nutricional status and imune system, and increase the risk of infections, hence, there an increase in the length of hospital stay and costs 1, 2, 3. Thus, it was identified the need to implemente a protocol for abbreviation of preoperative fasting.
