•30 market-relevant azo dyes with uses in textile and leather clothing were in focus.•Toxicological evidence was compiled and categorized by systematic evidence mapping.•187 peer-reviewed studies (54 human, 78 animal, 61 genotoxicity) were identified.•Evidence in peer-reviewed literature was limited, restricted to a few azo dyes only.•ECHA’s REACH registered substance database was the most abundant information source.
