Testing and predicting the response of reinforced conrete shear walls retrofitted for recentering

•A new seismic retrofit method that enables self-centering is evaluated.•Two retrofitted and one benchmark shear walls were tested under cyclic loading.•Retrofit changed behavior from shear/flexure to rocking.•Retrofit reduced residual drift and increased drift capacity.•Existing analytical methods require revisions for use with retrofitted walls.
