Assessment of sustainability of machining Ti-6Al-4V under cryogenic condition using energy map approach

摘要
•Energy consumption is analysed during turning of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V alloy under cryogenic conditions due to its convenience with cleaner production.•SCE map is developed using cutting speed and feed rate as the two machining variables due to their profound effects on energy consumption.•The developed map highlights regions of low, moderate and high energy consumption.•Tool chip contact length analysis underlines the effect of using cryogenic media in energy consumption by reducing the interfacial area.•The analysis of chip morphology reveals that energy consumption mostly depends on cutting speed due to its effect on shear angle and chip compression ratio.•Sustainability and productivity analysis of the developed SCE maps highlights significant gains indicating the far-reaching impacts of green manufacturing.
