•An internal interface engineering of yolk-shell structure is developed to realize fast and stable potassium storage.•The rate capability and cycle stability of Y-S NiS2@C@C composite outperforms most anodes reported so far for PIBs.•Comprehensive theoretical and experimental methods are applied to disclose the effect of internal NiS2/C interface on reaction kinetics and structural stability.
