Physical interpretations of diffusion-controlled intercalation and surface-redox charge storage behaviors

•The insights of surface-redox and intercalation pseudocapacitance were investigated.•Uniform ion concentration near surface were observed in surface-redox process.•Concentration gradients and hysteresis were present for extrinsic intercalation process.•Guidance of intrinsic pseudocapacitive electrode synthesis were proposed.
