•Novel alternate flow interconnector design is proposed for solid oxide fuel cells.•Flow directions of both fuel and air are alternated to improve thermal performance.•3D SOFC model is used to examine the design under different operating conditions.•Proposed design has a higher ammonia conversion rate than the cross-flow design.•Flatter temperature distribution contributes to an efficient and robust SOFC stack.
