•We used a MCDA framework to determine robust optimal school building interventions.•Criteria included educational attainment, health, energy performance and costs.•We compared combinations of energy retrofit and Indoor Environment Quality schemes.•MCDA results were sensitive to stakeholder preferences and interventions evaluated.
