•Compared with POD5 and AOT40, the POD1 function can better reflect the GPP loss of grassland in northern China.•Adding ozone module can improve the simulation accuracy of GPP.•Average annual ozone concentrations are lower in subtropical regions.•Vegetations in southern China will suffer from more severe ozone pollution due to higher stomatal conductance.
